Knowledge and Innovation: Investment for a New Africa

UNU-IAS will co-organise a session at the Eighth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD8) to be held in Tunis, Tunisia.

The UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) will co-organise a session at the Eighth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8) to be held in Tunis, Tunisia on 27–28 August 2022. The session will be part of the Tunisia TICAD Innovation 2022 side event and will consist of a two-day preparation meeting on 24–25 August and a summary session on 1 September.

Aligning with the conference’s objective to promote dialogue and cooperation for Africa’s development in the post-COVID-19 era, the session will focus on research collaboration between Africa and Japan. The event will identify potential partnerships for science, technology, and investment with a focus on water, energy, material sciences, biotechnology, health and ICT, among others.

UNU-IAS experts Akio Takemoto (Programme Head) and Kensuke Fukushi (Academic Programme Advisor) will present UNU-IAS research on water, policies, and sustainability related to Africa’s development.

This side event is co-organised with the Agency for the Promotion of Industry and Innovation (APII) with support from the Foundation Abdelwaheb Ben Ayed (FABA) and other public academic, research, and industrial institutions.

Participation in the preparation meeting and the summary session will be possible both online and in person. To participate in the preparation meeting, please register in advance.

The session will be held in English and French.

About TICAD

TICAD is an international conference to discuss the development of Africa. The conference was launched in 1993 upon proposal by the Government of Japan, and is co-hosted by the United Nations, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, and the African Union Commission (AUC). The eighth conference will take place in Africa for the second time after Kenya hosted TICAD 6 in 2016.
