Alia Yofira Karunian is a Research Consultant at the United Nations University Operating Unit on Policy-Driven Electronic Governance (UNU-EGOV) since April 2026.
Her expertise lies in legal and policy research on issues such as AI governance, platform accountability, data protection, surveillance, information integrity, and technology-facilitated gender-based violence.
Most notably, in 2024, as a Research Consultant with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Alia authored a comprehensive report examining how emerging technologies reshape regulatory landscapes and affect vulnerable communities in Indonesia.
Moreover, Alia also led capacity-building efforts in AI governance, delivering sessions on AI Ethics & Human Rights and AI Legislation & Regulation at the AI Literacy for Electoral Actors in the Asia Pacific Workshop in 2024. Organized by International IDEA, the workshop brought together stakeholders across the Asia-Pacific to advance digital literacy and responsible AI governance in electoral processes.
Alia holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in Innovation, Technology, and the Law with distinction from the University of Edinburgh as a Chevening scholar. Her dissertation, “The Imitation Game: Examining Regulatory Challenges of Political Deepfakes in the EU”, was awarded the RBS prize for Best Dissertation.
