Karla Locher-Krause is a Research Assistant in the Systems and Flux Analysis Unit at UNU FLORES. She studied forestry sciences in Southern Chile, focusing on forest dynamics and later expanding her work to include land-use / land-cover dynamics and changes, and landscape ecology. She worked at the Austral University in Chile both overseeing and supporting several projects related to natural resources utilisation, especially focusing on the monitoring of local vegetation. During this period she also contributed to lectures on geographical information systems (GIS), land-use planning, and landscape ecology. Prior to joining UNU-FLORES, she worked at Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ in Leipzig and in cooperation with the University of Bonn, where she will obtain a PhD in engineering applied to natural resources. During this time, her research has focused on the integration of different tools and disciples as remote sensing and models to understand processes such as land use/cover dynamics, fragmentation as well as ecosystem services (supply and its beneficiaries) at different spatial and temporal scales. She was also part of the interdisciplinary science-policy interface team, EKLIPSE. Karla is interested in how integrative research on the fluxes between land and water systems contributes towards the sustainable use of multifunctional landscapes, using diverse remote sensing and models (ecosystem services) approaches.
