UNU Establishes SURE Hub with PUC-Rio

The hub will focus on Sustainability and Urban Resilience in Engineering.

The United Nations University has established the SURE Hub in Brazil at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), aimed at advancing research on sustainability and urban resilience. “SURE” is derived from the Hub’s focus on these two key themes.

PUC-Rio, recognized as a national and Latin American center of excellence in Civil and Environmental Engineering, brings long-standing expertise in urban and environmental engineering to this initiative. The Hub will concentrate its efforts on applying a Resource Nexus perspective across three interconnected areas: sustainable and resilient urban infrastructure, environmentally responsible construction materials, and integrated approaches to urbanization and resource management.

UNU-FLORES will co-coordinate the hub, contributing expertise on integrated resource management.

The SURE Hub builds on UNU-FLORES’ strong synergies with initiatives such as the CARE Excellence Cluster on Climate-Neutral and Resource-Efficient Construction and the UNEP-supported Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction.
