Professor Simukanga is the Coordinator of the Mineral Resources Unit of UNU-INRA, located at the School of Mines of the University of Zambia. He has been Vice-Chancellor of the University of Zambia since July 2007. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and Chartered Engineer of the Engineering Council of the United Kingdom. He is also a Fellow of both the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Engineering Institution of Zambia. He served as Registrar of the Engineers’ Registration Board of Zambia from 2000 to 2010. He has served the University of Zambia for over 23 years, started  working as a lecturer/researcher in the School of Mines of the University of Zambia, where he rose to the position of Professor in Metallurgy and Mineral Processing. Prof Simukanga has served as visiting lecturer at the University of Cape Town and University of Zimbabwe. He has also served as External Examiner in both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in other universities. He has supervised a number of postgraduate students and published scientific papers in the area of metallurgy and mineral processing. His major area of interest is in the processing of agro-minerals such as phosphates and agricultural lime for use by farmers. He sits on various boards both locally and internationally, some of which he chairs.
