On 29 November 2024, UNU will host “Security as a Foundation for Achieving Sustainable Development in Haiti ”, a BIG IDEAS Dialogue with Ambassador Cristobal Dupouy, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Haiti. This hybrid event (online and in-person) will start at 18:30 on Zoom and in the 2F Reception Hall at UNU Headquarters in Tokyo.
This event will offer an opportunity to understand the complexities of Haiti’s current situation and the critical role of international partnerships in promoting stability and sustainable solutions.
Ambassador Dupouy will join will join UNU Senior Vice-Rector Sawako Shirahase to discuss the OAS Permanent Council resolution supporting the transition of the Multinational Security Support Mission into a peacekeeping mission, emphasizing the importance of sustained international collaboration. Ambassador Dupouy will also discuss joint OAS-UN efforts, particularly in combating corruption and strengthening governance.

About the Speaker
Ambassador Cristobal Dupouy, a Chilean diplomat born in Tokyo, has served as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the OAS in Haiti since 2018. He holds a master’s degree in international relations and a doctorate in Soviet-Latin American relations from the Sorbonne.
Since joining the OAS in 2006, Ambassador Dupouy has led efforts to support governance, elections and security in Haiti. He has mobilized over US$80 million for development projects and played a pivotal role during major crises, including the aftermath of President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination. As Dean of Ambassadors in Haiti, he continues to work on key initiatives such as constitutional reform, support for the Multinational Security Support Mission, and mediation of the cross-border dispute between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
