On 3 December 2024, UNU will host “Redefining Workspaces for a Sustainable and Resource-efficient UN”, a BIG IDEAS Dialogue with Ms. Atiqah Fairuz Salleh, Advisor on Strategic Initiatives of UNU-FLORES. This online event will be held via Zoom webinar at 18:00 JST (UTC+9).
Ms. Salleh will join UNU Senior Vice-Rector Sawako Shirahase to discuss how UNU-FLORES’s dedication to sustainability is shaping a cutting-edge office design that emphasizes both resource efficiency and social well-being. The event sheds the light of the FLORES's flexible office concept, rooted in the Resource Nexus approach, which maximizes the use of energy, space, and materials within the workplace.
By focusing on both environmental and social sustainability through a participatory design process, this approach transforms office spaces into adaptable, efficient environments, while showcasing how strategic resource management can align with broader sustainability goals across the UN. This case study illustrates how flexible office designs can significantly reduce environmental impact while fostering collaboration and responsible resource use. The discussion will explore how this forward-thinking model can inspire organizations and institutions worldwide to lead by example and contribute to a sustainable future by embedding sustainability practices into their workplaces.

About the speaker
Ms. Atiqah Fairuz Salleh has been with UNU-FLORES since 2016 and was formerly the Advocacy & Public Affairs Officer, where she led the Communications and Advocacy team before assuming her current functions.
Ms. Salleh is now an Advisor on Strategic Initiatives and manages pivotal projects such as the House from Waste and the flexible office. Simultaneously pursuing her doctorate at TU Dresden and UNU-FLORES, Atiqah’s research focuses on the transformative potential of urban agriculture – and particularly vertical farming – in building sustainable cities and communities. Prior to joining UNU, Ms. Salleh worked in Communications with Transparency International in the global fight against corruption and has served various functions in administration, research, and teaching in the higher education space. As an advocate for good governance and informed decision-making, Atiqah seeks to bridge the gap between science, policy, and society. She is curious about the diffusion of norms and ideas and gets excited about innovation.
