In Memoriam: Yoshikazu Hasegawa, former Japan Foundation for UNU Director

Mr. Yoshikazu Hasegawa, former Sr. Managing Director of the Japan Foundation for the United Nations University, died on 21 February 2022.

It is with great sorrow that the United Nations University (UNU) has learned of the passing of Yoshikazu Hasegawa, former Senior Managing Director of the Japan Foundation for the United Nations University (JFUNU).

Mr Hasegawa died on 21 February 2022 at the age of 82.

A graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo, Mr. Hasegawa began his career with the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture (MONBUSHO; now the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)), Japan. Among the roles that he held during his distinguished  career were Counselor at the Japanese Embassy in Paris, France; Secretary-General of the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies; and Director-General of the MONBUSHO Science and International Affairs Bureau.

As Director of the Ministry’s Science and International Affairs Bureau from 1990‒1993, Mr, Hasegawa contributed greatly to strengthening of the relationship between the  Government of Japan and UNU.

Mr. Hasegawa also served as Executive Director of the Japan Arts Council; Professor at Kanto Gakuin University, College of Humanities; and President of the Association pour la Promotion de l'Enseignement du Français au Japon.

He joined JFUNU in 2000, serving first as a Director (until 2009) and then as JFUNU Senior Managing Director (until November 2021).
