On 22 May 2026, the United Nations University (UNU) and the Embassy of the Republic of Albania in Japan, will co-host the symposium “Albania’s Membership Path to the European Union”. This event will begin at 12:15 at the UNU Headquarters in Tokyo.

As Europe continues to navigate geopolitical uncertainty, economic transformation and the evolving future of regional integration, the enlargement of the European Union remains one of the continent’s most significant strategic projects. Albania has made European Union membership a national priority, advancing reforms aimed at strengthening democratic governance, the rule of law and sustainable economic development.

Japan has also increased its engagement with the region through its Western Balkans Cooperation Initiative launched in 2018 to support socioeconomic reforms, regional cooperation and the European integration of the Western Balkans. Through this framework, Japan has deepened partnerships across the region through development cooperation, policy dialogue and the sharing of experience in common challenges including disaster management and economic development.

For this special event, UNU will welcome His Excellency Mr. Edi Rama, Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania, who will deliver a keynote address on Albania’s progress towards European Union accession, the opportunities and challenges ahead, and the broader implications of enlargement for Europe and the international community. The keynote will be followed by a panel discussion and an interactive Q&A session.

This event will be held in English. Advance registration (by 21 May at 15:00) is required.
