China Scholarship Council Internship Programme

The China Scholarship Council (CSC) is a non-profit organization under China’s Ministry of Education that manages most of China’s government-funded study-abroad and study-in-China scholarships.

The CSC runs a joint “internship” (or practical placement) programme with a variety of UN agencies and international organizations.

The purpose of the CSC internship programme hosted by UNU is twofold:

  1. Provide eligible young Chinese university graduates with an opportunity to gain exposure to research work and related functions at UNU, including its offices and research institutes, in order to enhance their employability and gain educational skills and experience through the work of UNU.
  2. Provide UNU with the assistance of qualified individuals specialized in various professional fields.

Financial support

CSC financially supports selected interns according to the prescribed Chinese government scholarship standards. Such support shall include round-trip international airfare to and from the place of assignment, a scholarship to cover the intern's visa fee, costs of accommodation, primary living expenses and travel, and health and life insurance coverage appropriate for the nature of the place of assignment and duties.

Duration and eligibility 

The initial maximum duration of the internships is (9) months, which may be extended, for a total period not exceeding twelve (12) months.

To be eligible for the UNU internship programme, candidates should meet one of the following requirements:

  • Candidates must be enrolled in the final academic year of a Master’s or PhD programme;
  • Candidates must have graduated from a Master’s or PhD programme within one (1) year and must currently be employed in China; or
  • Candidates must have graduated from a Master’s or PhD programme within one (1) year and must currently be undertaking an internship at an international organization overseas.

In addition to meeting one of the above requirements:

  • Candidates must be at least eighteen (18) years old and must not exceed thirty (30) years old.
  • Candidates must be fluent (written and spoken) in English. Knowledge of one of the other officlal languages of the United Nations (French, Arabic, Russian, Spanish and Chinese) is considered an asset.
  • Candidates must be able to adapt to an international working environment and have good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Candidates must possess computer literacy and knowledge of Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
