Kalle Hirvonen is a Research Fellow at UNU-WIDER, seconded from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

Through his research, Kalle seeks to understand how to sustainably improve nutrition and food security outcomes in low-income countries. Thematically, this work sits at the intersection of development, health, and agricultural economics. He has done extensive work in areas of social protection, agriculture-nutrition linkages, food systems, value chains and food markets. Most of Kalle’s research focuses on Ethiopia and is based on statistical analyses of primary data from large-scale household surveys or randomized controlled trials.

Kalle has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles in top scientific journals such as the Lancet Global Health, BMJ Global Health, JAMA Pediatrics, American Journal of Agricultural Economics, World Bank Economic Review, Economic Development and Cultural Change, and World Development. His research has been widely cited by other scholars as well as leading media outlets, including the Economist, New York Times, Reuters, and the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE).
