This book emanates from research in a wide range of disciplines and includes work by leading African and international scholars. It focuses on the trends in and conditions for reaching sustainable environmental and resource management development for Sub-Saharan African region in the medium-term future. In the first part it analyses the driving forces of environmental change in the region, including persistent poverty, population growth, urbanization, industrialization, and energy production and consumption. The second part contains selected issues central to sustainability, including agriculture on which the majority of people still depend for their livelihood.
