The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2015, contain many goals and indicators in relation to the water cycle. For example, the following were identified: securing water resources and a sanitary environment, coping with water related disasters, conserving forests and ecosystems, and strong infrastructure. In order to achieve these goals, it is necessary to develop a method that appropriately evaluates the situation surrounding water in the world.
Japan has formulated a plan based on the Basic Law on the Water Cycle and is making efforts towards sound water cycle. To promote measures on challenges in relation to the water cycle, it is necessary to appropriately evaluate the situation on water.
To this end, this project will review the soundness evaluation of the water cycle published by other international organisations. Furthermore, it develops a draft method of soundness evaluation for the water cycle to understand the situation on water resource development and supply facility, progress on conserving water infrastructure, water environment and ecosystem in water treatment facilities, and recent progress on coping with water.
