In an agreement between the United Nations University (UNU) and UNESCO signed in 2010, a new UNESCO-UNU Chair on Regional Integration, Migration and Free Movement of People was established to be based in Bruges and in collaboration with the University of Pretoria (South Africa), Department of Political Science. The agreement specified that “the purpose of the Chair shall be to promote an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation in the fields of regional integration, migration and free movement of people. It serves as a means of facilitating collaboration between high-level, internationally recognized researchers and teaching staff of UNU-CRIS and other institutions in Belgium and in other countries of Europe and North America as well as in other regions of the world, particularly Africa.” The new Chair was created in the broader framework of UNU-UNESCO Chairs, which are being set up by UNU, UNESCO and a university, institution of higher learning or research institution in higher learning. The Chair’s activities must correspond to both UNESCO’s mandate and UNU objectives.
