The United Nations University (UNU) announced today that Professor Kunal Kalyan Sen has been selected to be the next Director of the Helsinki-based UNU World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER).
Prof. Sen — currently a faculty member at The University of Manchester (UK) — will join UNU-WIDER as Director-designate from 1 September 2018. He will assume the helm as UNU-WIDER Director from 1 January 2019, succeeding Prof. Finn Tarp, who has served as Director of the Institute since 2009.
UNU-WIDER, established over 30 years ago as the first research centre of the UNU, is a global leader in development economics research. It is a unique blend of think tank and research institute, operating within the United Nations system as a constituent institute of UNU and providing a range of services from policy advice to freely available original research. UNU-WIDER focuses on transformation, inclusion, and sustainability, including the cross-cutting concerns of Africa, gender, and development finance to promote sustainable and equitable development.
Internationally recognised for his research excellence and extensive record of academic publications, Prof. Sen is widely regarded as a leading expert in his field. He currently is Professor of Development Economics in the Global Development Institute at The University of Manchester, and serves as Joint Research Director for the Effective States and Inclusive Development Research Centre.
Prof. Sen has substantial experience directing and managing global research consortia, and has served in advisory roles with national governments as well as bilateral and multilateral development agencies He holds a PhD degree in Economics from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
