On 20 November 2018, UNU will host “New Challenges for Humanitarian Action: Complex Conflicts and Sustainable Development”, a conversation with Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross. This event will start at 6:30 p.m. at UNU Headquarters in Tokyo.

The challenges for relief and aid groups are ever mounting, with more than every fifth country affected and more than one in sixty people in need of humanitarian support. Additionally, short-term humanitarian responses and long-term development goals have become increasingly intertwined as the thematic challenges of humanitarian crises have become much more transnational and persistent.

Amidst the rise of new challenges and demands, humanitarian action has to adapt itself to more effectively protect the lives and dignities of those affected. What are the key concerns and challenges today in the humanitarian world and how are they being addressed? How reconcilable are humanitarian aims and development goals? Which hurdles have arisen as humanitarian action has grown to a multi-billion-dollar sector?

Peter Maurer will join UNU Rector David M. Malone to discuss the rapidly changing outlook of humanitarian action and how it can respond to current and future challenges.

The UNU Conversation Series aims to foster audience participation: you are encouraged to engage with the speakers during the conversation and at the reception that will follow, where all audience members are invited to enjoy the food and drinks that will be served while exchanging ideas and making new contacts.

Please note that this event will be in English only; Japanese interpretation will not be provided. Advance registration (by 19 November) is required. Please click on the REGISTER button above to access the online registration page.
