Since its establishment in September 1974, the International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences (IATSS) has sought to contribute to the realization of an ideal transportation environment by furthering international, interdisciplinary research on issues related to traffic and safety.

After the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011, IATSS launched a special project of “comprehensive research on earthquake crisis management and the realization of a safe, secure transportation environment.” A special symposium was held in November 2011, and in March 2012 compiled recommendations  were presented to the Japan Reconstruction Agency and related government agencies.

From Thursday, 20 September to Friday, 21 September, UNU-ISP will host a two-day IATSS 2012 International Symposium and Workshop on “Transportation and Safety for the Coming Age: Learning from the Lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake”. This event will bring together many experts from Japan and overseas to share their knowledge with each other and with the world.

For more information, see the event page on the UNU-ISP website.
