According to the International Organization for Migration the net migration rate in Malaysia (2010–2015) is 0.4 per 1,000 population and immigrants represent 8.4 percent of the total population. Responding to the challenges surrounding migration, Malaysia works on medical and health-related assistance, cultural orientation, migration management, counter trafficking, and assisted voluntary return and reintegration.
In this regard, the UNU International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH), in collaboration with the UNU Migration Network — a research collaboration across five UNU Institutes — is organizing a first of its kind Symposium on Migration on 13 January 2015 in Kuala Lumpur. The symposium will share knowledge and recent research results of the UNU Migration Network, research practices and expertise on migration among UN agencies, member states and other relevant stakeholders, and aims to bridge gaps in this field with appropriate policy development.
The symposium will be a unique opportunity for Malaysian stakeholders to hear from UNU migration experts worldwide, discuss local implications of international migration policy development and promote future policy and legislation on migration. The symposium will also provide the opportunity for international experts to learn about Malaysian experiences and lessons learned.
