On 15 March 2015, the UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) and the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education are co-organizing an official side event on Integrated Water Cycle Management for Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainability at the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan.
Both urbanization and climate change increase urban flood risks throughout the world. This side event at the WCDRR will explore sustainable approaches to urban water management for disaster reduction and amenity through water cycle stability. The event compares experiences from different countries to understand the balance between centralized and decentralized (on-site) measures and the
importance of community participation. It will also analyze how community participation varies depending on awareness levels, presentation, and the direct benefits received by the immediate community.
