How Do Social Protection Programmes Influence Decisions to Migrate?

Joint UNU-MERIT/MGSoG seminar: “What Do We Know About the Impact of Social Protection Programmes on the Decision to Migrate?

Migration and social protection are tightly linked issues in many ways. In the first part of this seminar, Dr. Jessica Hagen-Zanker, ODI, will discuss the theoretical links, interesting questions and empirical evidence around these issues. In the second part, she will focus on one question in more detail and present the state of the evidence on the impact of social protection coverage on migration flows.

Research has shown that access to social protection can affect the propensity to migrate in a number of ways; half of the studies show that migration increased while another half show that migration decreased. The relationship is clearly not linear, and the presentation will finish by discussing future research.

For more information, see the Calendar of upcoming events on the UNU-MERIT website.
