On 23 April 2019, UNU will host “Threats and Opportunities in the Sphere of International Security and Disarmament” a conversation with Ms Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs.
This event will start at 18:30 on 23 April 2019 in the 2F Reception Hall at UNU Headquarters in Tokyo.
Since the Second World War, some governments have relied on nuclear weapons in their security policies. In recent years, a number of actors joined together to seek accelerated measures for the elimination of the development, stockpiling, and testing of nuclear weapons, which culminated in the adoption by the United Nations in 2017 of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The global political climate has shifted significantly in the years since, marked by a notable deterioration in relations between nuclear powers and a greater scepticism by some about multilateral dialogue.
In May 2018, in response to the deteriorating security environment, the Secretary-General launched his Agenda for Disarmament to reinvigorate dialogue and negotiations on international disarmament, stimulate new ideas and create new momentum. As new developments in science and technology continuously increase nuclear dangers and risks, the Secretary-General has also called for the international community to find consensus on a new vision for nuclear disarmament.
Ms Izumi Nakamitsu will join Dr David Passarelli, UNU Executive Officer, to discuss the prospects for international security in an era of great power tension and rapidly evolving weapons of war.
The UNU Conversation Series aims to foster audience participation: you are encouraged to engage with the speakers during the conversation and at the reception that will follow, where all audience members are invited to enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres that will be served while exchanging ideas and making new contacts.
Please note that this event will be in English only; Japanese interpretation will not be provided. Advance registration (by 22 April 2019) is required. Please click on the REGISTER button above to access the online registration page.
