On 30 January 2015 UNU will host “The Global Compact: A Corporate Whitewash or Effective Actor?”, a conversation with Mr. Toshio Arima, Board Member of the United Nations Global Compact and Chairman of the Board for the Global Compact Japan Network. This event will start at 6:30 PM at UNU Headquarters in Tokyo.
As a primary driver of globalization, business can help ensure that markets, commerce, technology and finance advance in ways that contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable global economy. Recognizing this, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) was established as a leadership platform for the development and implementation of sustainable corporate policies and practices that align business with universal principles promoting human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
Mr. Toshio Arima will join UNU Rector David M. Malone for a conversation discussing why the UNGC was created, how it is organized and governed, its major activities and its relation to corporate social responsibility. With nearly 8,000 business participants in over 140 countries UNGC is the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative. The conversation will explore the Global Compact Japan Network in addition to worldwide examples of UNGC efforts to enhance corporate accountability and transparency and provide a space for collective action in support of broader UN goals, including the post-2015 development agenda.
The UNU Conversation Series aims to foster audience participation: you are encouraged to engage with the speakers during the conversation and at the reception that will follow, where all audience members are invited to enjoy the food and drinks that will be served while exchanging ideas and making new contacts.
Please note that this event will be in English only; Japanese interpretation will not be provided. Advance registration (by 29 January) is required. Please click on the REGISTER button above to access the registration page.
