UNU-IAS and the Science Council of Japan are co-organizing the International Conference on Science and Technology for Sustainability 2014: Transdisciplinarity for Global Sustainability Strategies for Research and Capacity Building, on 18 July at The Auditorium, Science Council of Japan. The conference will feature a short address by Kazuhiko Takemoto, UNU-IAS Director, and an introductory speech by Kazuhiko Takeuchi, UNU Senior Vice-Rector.
The conference will develop proposals for education and capacity building to cultivate transdisciplinary thinking, while integrating discussion on research integration. It aims to contribute to the future implementation of Future Earth, a 10-year international research initiative that both UNU and the SCJ are actively supporting.
The first session will discuss how to achieve research integration for global sustainability, as well as the roles played by the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. Discussions will also address how to build interfaces between science, policy and society, promoting cooperation among policymakers and a broad range of other stakeholders. The second session will discuss sustainability education at the elementary, secondary, and higher levels, and the participation by diverse stakeholders in Regional Centres of Expertise (RCE) and other efforts for the promotion of ESD.
