This symposium, organized by the UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability and Ochanomizu University, will bring together scholars, representatives of UN agencies and non-governmental organizations, and other experts to discuss issues related to sustainability and gender. It aims to promote a sustainable society that encourages empowerment of women and social minorities and transformation towards a society that challenges hegemonic masculinity, taking into account responsibilities to future generations.

The symposium will explore a range of issues such as women’s empowerment and gender-responsive transformative approaches with a view to building a sustainable and equitable future. Panel presentations will include case studies from Fukushima and related experiences from elsewhere in Japan and Germany, as well as lessons learned in ecology feminism from a human security perspective.

Organized in advance of the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (WCESD) to be held in Nagoya, this symposium aims to ensure that gender issues will be substantially debated at the WCESD, and that gender perspectives will be properly incorporated in the follow-up actions. It is expected that the conclusions of the symposium will be presented at a side event of the WCESD and reflected in Post-2014 ESD follow-up activities, as well as in the Post-2015 development agenda.

Japanese–English simultaneous translation will be provided. Admission to the symposium is free, but the advance registration is required. To register, please visit the registration page on the Ochanomizu University website.
