    UNU International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH)

    UNU-IIGH is one of 14 research and training centres that comprise the UNU system. As a UN think tank, the mission of UNU-IIGH is to build knowledge and capacity for decision-making by UN agencies, programmes, and Member States about global health issues. The aim of UNU-IIGH is to contribute to the development and strengthening of health services policy frameworks and management actions, particularly for people in developing countries, and to support implementation of promotive and preventive approaches to human health. UNU-IIGH’s research and capacity building in global health relates specifically to informing the policy debates and directions that ensure that, in keeping with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), “no one is left behind”.

    Fellows at UNU-IIGH are expected to develop and lead programmes of research and capacity building, with a focus on generating knowledge and informing critical policy debates across UN agencies and member states.

    To that end, we are looking for an outstanding researcher who can work with relevant partners and stakeholders to develop new global interdisciplinary programmes in global public health that address issues of marginalisation from access to health and health care (age and ageing, gender, forced migration, indigeneity, geography, universal health coverage, global health governance, reproductive health, and human rights). Applicants must demonstrate a track record in policy analysis and a strong methodological background in qualitative or quantitative data collection and analysis.

    Responsibilities

    Under the leadership of the Directorate, the Research Fellow will:

    • contribute effectively to the IIGH research programme, and the publication of policy-relevant research outputs
    • mobilise external resources for the establishment of research projects and programmes for capacity building in the IIGH areas of focus
    • manage research projects with external researchers and partners
    • participate in local and international research, policy, and outreach events
    • assist in preparing and implementing conference, communications, and meeting activities within the remit of UNU-IIGH
    • carry out teaching, training and supervision within the capacity building programmes of the Institute, including direct supervision of interns, junior researchers, PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows
    • draft research and management reports
    • engage with members of the UN Country Team and other regional agencies in providing support towards the achievement of the SDGs
    • prepare presentations and speeches for specialist and non-specialist audiences
    • perform other tasks as assigned by the Director

    Required qualifications and experience

    Required qualifications and experience include:

    • PhD in public health or related field
    • a minimum 10 years of progressively senior professional work experience, including the management of research and training programmes
    • demonstrated ability  to carry out and manage development research activities in an international environment
    • evidence of academic and peer-reviewed publications related to the programme areas outlined above
    • demonstrated track record in the international research and policy agenda in areas related to the Institute’s research programme
    • evidence of teaching and research supervision experience
    • excellent verbal and written skills in English across a range of communication formats (academic publications, program reports, policy briefs); knowledge of other official UN languages would be an asset
    • strong track record of competitive funding and resource mobilisation from national and international funding agencies
    • excellent team player with strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity

    Remuneration

    We offer a competitive net salary (tax-exempted) at P-4 level and allowances including post adjustment. Post adjustment is subject to change. The position is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

    The post carries the standard set of United Nations benefits and entitlements for international positions in the UN Common Systems, including participation in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund, the possibility of participation in a health insurance programme, education grant, removal expenses, and home leave.     The Rector reserves the right to appoint a candidate at a level below that advertised.

    Duration of contract

    This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment. The initial appointment will be for a period of one (1) year, which can be extended subject to conditions established in the UNU guidelines, with the combined duration of fixed-term appointments not exceeding six (6) years. The mandatory age of retirement for United Nations staff is 65 years.

    Staff members of the United Nations University are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Rector and may be assigned to any of the activities or offices of the United Nations University.
