In early May, the UNU International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST) signed a collaboration agreement with the University of Bremen (Germany) to use their complementary strengths and expertise to develop and apply information communication technology (ICT) for poverty reduction. This partnership is considered a natural one given the complementary strengths of the two institutions and the close alignment of their missions.
Earlier this year, UNU-IIST embarked on a long-term strategic partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to apply ICT to accelerate the ministry’s efforts to eradicate poverty in Laos through grassroots capacity-building. The collaboration by UNU-IIST with the University of Bremen adds important technical capabilities to this effort, particularly in the area of cognitive science (which is crucial in designing software for use by non-experts).
UNU-IIST and the University of Bremen intend to jointly carry out research, education, capacity building and policy support in the area of ICT for Poverty Reduction, and will seek to establish a joint center to house these activities. In addition, the collaboration will extend to the UNU-IIST Global Research Benchmarking system, which is designed to assist in strategic decision-making, notably in systems of higher education in the developing world.
While in Bremen, UNU-IIST Director Peter Haddawy delivered a public talk at the Bremen House of Science on “ICT-Enabled Education for Poverty Reduction”. Director Haddawy′s talk was introduced by University of Bremen Rector Wilfried Mueller; it was attended by a large number of faculty members and members of the community at large.
On the morning following his talk, Prof. Haddawy was received by Bremen Mayor Jens Böhrnsen.
