In line with the core mission of the UNU International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH) to provide capacity building and promote efficiency, access, quality and equity in the delivery of healthcare services, Prof. Dr. Syed Aljunid, Senior Research Fellow, and Mr. Hamzah, IT Consultant on Casemix, recently conducted a five-day mission to the Islamic Republic of Iran to introduce the UNU-IIGH casemix system to the Iranian Social Security Organization (SSO) and Ministry of Health.
Casemix is a healthcare management tool for improving care and reducing costs by providing a consistent method of classifying types of patients, their treatment and associated costs. The casemix system comprises diagnosis-related groups (DRG) in combination with clinical cost-modeling tools, in the form of a software grouper.
During the mission, Prof. Syed Aljunid and Mr. Hamzah conducted a workshop on the Casemix/DRG System for Health Financing in the headquarters of the SSO of Iran. The objectives of the workshop were to (i) introduce to healthcare executives and healthcare workers the philosophy and overall concepts of casemix, (ii) inform the participants about the roles/functions of casemix and (iii) familiarize them on the data requirements of the casemix system.
The workshop was attended by more than 40 participants from the Ministry of Health and SSO as well as staff from the participating hospitals and from the academic sector.
The UNU Case-Based Groups software grouper will be implemented in three Iranian hospitals selected by SSO: Milad Hospital, Kishanai Hospital and Rasool Ekram Hospital. Prior to conducting the workshop, the UNU delegates were able to visit and meet with the Directors of the three participating hospitals.
The mission also met with executives and faculties of the School of Health Management and School of Public Health at Tehran University, to introduce them to the work of UNU-IIGH. Topics of discussion encompassed the potential for establishing a PhD exchange programme, conducting casemix certificate and postgraduate training, and establishing a casemix training centre in Iran.
