On 21–23 May, the UNU International Institute for Global Health, together with University Kebangsaan Malaysia, hosted the 6th Postgraduate Forum on Health Systems and Policies. The theme of this event was “Inspiring sustainable management of non-communicable diseases: Challenges and solutions for health systems”.

The main objective of this annual event, which rotates among co-hosts in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, is to provide a platform for PhD students to communicate the knowledge gained during their research and to share their experiences with new PhD enrollees. Invited international speakers also give presentations in keynote and plenary sessions.

This year′s forum was attended by 130 registered participants, and 100 abstracts were submitted. In addition to postgraduates from the hosting universities, there were participants from Iran, India and Africa.

A highlight of this year’s scientific programme was the inaugural Scientific Merit Research Award to promote the writing of good-quality scientific abstracts among postgraduate candidates. The award also allows evaluation of the ability of the postgraduates to effectively communicate their research findings to a wider audience through oral presentations. The top three oral presenters and three best poster presentations received cash awards.

The top 40 abstracts will be published in a supplemental issue of the BMC Public Health Journal, while a selection of the remaining abstracts will be published in a supplemental issue of the Malaysian Public Health Journal. This provides an opportunity for the participating postgraduates to gain recognition for their works in progress and to share their ideas with a wider audience.

The interactive forum session on “Surviving graduate education”, in which peer postgraduates discussed their experiences and the obstacles they had faced, particularly captured the interest of the participants. The forum′s social programme highlighted visits to places of interest in the historical state of Melaka.

The 2013 forum will be held in Thailand on 24–25 June.
