More than one thousand local residents and visitors toured the UNU Institute on Comparative Regional Studies (UNU-CRIS) over the weekend (10 and 11 September), when the Institute opened its doors to the public to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

“UNU-CRIS started as a dream: to show that it is possible to conduct focused but interdisciplinary social sciences research that produces both theoretical advancements and policy-relevant results. This dream has also shown that studying regional governance is of major importance for understanding the future of multilateralism in today’s multipolar world,” commented Dr. Luk Van Langenhove, Director UNU-CRIS, in his commemorative Director’s Message.

UNU-CRIS specializes in the processes and consequences of regional integration and cooperation. Over the past decade, the Institute has become an invaluable resource for the UN system, with particular links to UN bodies dealing with regional integration. The Institute also works in partnership with initiatives and centres throughout the world that are concerned with issues of integration and cooperation.

The “10th Birthday” Open Weekend included guided tours of the UNU-CRIS’s Bruges headquarters, where various displays helped showcase UNU-CRIS’ achievements and highlights over the past decade. It also included a public lecture by Dr. Van Langenhove on “the UN and armed conflict,” which was attended by over 150 people.

Dr. Van Langenhove also used the occassion to thank the many supporters of UNU-CRIS over the past ten years:

“As the saying goes: it takes a dream to create a successful business, but it takes people to make dreams a reality…. UNU-CRIS has been extremely lucky to be able to count on the support of many people. A warm thanks to all of them! … Today, we are looking to the future with the ambition of strengthening our local presence and global impact. There is a pressing societal need to realize that ambition.”
