The United Nations University operates programmes in three countries. The University’s institutes and programmes share a similar thematic scope and breadth of their individual activities; the major difference lies in their size (the programmes typically are smaller) and the degree of permanence of their funding, focus areas and institutional structures. UNU programmes, unlike institutes, are not required to obtain long-term funding sufficient to guarantee their capital and recurring costs for a critical mass of core staff. They are, however, required to establish an advisory committee to provide guidance to the programme director/coordinator.
