The UNU International Courses (UNU/IC)
UNU Headquarters, Tokyo, Japan 15 May - 23 June 2000

The United Nations University (UNU) will offer four "International Courses" from 15 May to 23 June 2000 at the UNU Headquarters in Tokyo. The UNU successfully concluded the pilot phase of the International Courses in spring 1999. The UNU/ICs, which will be held annually, are meant for postgraduate students and professionals in various occupations with a college or university degree in Japan and abroad who are interested in working in international fields, in public-service or private organizations, including the UN system, multinational corporations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as well as national foreign service organizations.
The UNU/ICs analyze global issues from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. The teaching staff comprises both in-house and outside experts, including practitioners from a number of different UN organizations. One of the key features of the UNU/ICs is the direct contact that students have with the teaching faculty and more individualized attention that students receive from both the teaching staff and academic counselors. The courses are meant to give students a deep understanding of selected global issues, sharpened analytical and problem-solving skills, an opportunity to develop specific research skills through preparation of an essay as well as an opportunity to interact intellectually with a wide cross-section of people from diverse academic, professional and cultural backgrounds.
The four courses to be offered in May 2000 are as follows:
I. Armed Conflict and Peace-keeping;
II. Environmental Institutions and Governance;
III. Human Rights: Concept and Issues; and
IV. International Trade and Dispute Settlement
Participants are expected to take one or two courses at a time. Each course will have 18 sessions (three sessions per week) during the 6-week course period. One of the sessions will be used either for a supplementary lecture or discussion session or a special lecture. The courses will involve considerable reading and study, but will be scheduled to allow students to have sufficient preparatory and review time for each course. The tuition will be Japanese yen 100,000 per course (about US dollars 900 at the current UN exchange rate of September 1999) or Japanese yen 150,000 for two courses. A limited number of fellowships will be available to those participants from developing countries who take two courses and who can successfully demonstrate the need for financial assistance.
| * This course will be supported by the Yutaka Akino Memorial Donation from the Government of Japan and will be called "Akino Memorial Course". |
