「食」は、地球上のすべての生物にとり、その生存に関わる問題です。人間の場合は、体だけでなく心を維持するためにも食物を必要としています。私たちは食物から、生命の糧を得るだけではなく、楽しみも得ているからです。私たちは三度の食事のために、毎日多くの時間をかけていますし、食べることは日々の生活のよき潤滑油として重要な役割を果たしています。このように「食」は、私たちの日常生活で非常に大きな位置を占めていますが、はたしてどれほどの人が、私たちが口にする食物が、どこでどのように生産され流通してきているのか、身体や環境への影響はどうなっているのか、限られた資源を消費することで他にどのような影響を及ぼしているのか、などについて考えているのでしょうか。

今回の国連大学グローバル・セミナー沖縄セッションは、昨今の「食」をめぐる様々な問題について、深く考える機会になることを目的としています。食糧生産の著しい産業化とグローバリゼーションは、私たちの食生活をどのように変えたのか。世界の食糧の安全保障は現在どのような状況で、国連や各援助国は改善のためにどのような活動をしているのか。グローバリゼーションに伴う食品貿易は、食品品質と各国の国内食品産業にどのような影響を及ぼしているのか。遺伝子組み換え食品をめぐる議論から何を学ぶことができるのか。このような内容の一連の講義と、全体討論や少人数でのグループ討論を通して、国内外の「食」に関する第一線の専門家達の見識と経験を学ぶことができるでしょう。また、沖縄料理の講義と試食をする時間も設けてありますので、地球規模の食糧生産と消費の変化が、地域の食文化にどのような影響を与えてきているのかについても考える機会としたいと思います。

国連大学グローバル・セミナーは、国際社会が直面している地球規模の問題について、学生や若い社会人の関心を高め、理解を深めることを目的としています。国際問題に関心のある方、国際社会で働きたい方には、知識を深め、分析力を高め、議論の進め方を学ぶ絶好の場となるでしょう。なお、セミナー初日の基調講演は一般公開でおこなわれ、通訳がつきますので、多くの方々のご聴講を歓迎いたします。

Food is a matter of life for all living beings. Humans need food to sustain their bodies and their minds. We eat for survival, but also for pleasure. The preparation of food and its consumption occupy a considerable share of our waking hours. Many social rituals evolve around eating. We spend much time thinking about food ? but usually, we only worry about what to eat next, while we do not contemplate how our food was produced and by whom, what exactly its nutritional value is, how our consumption of this food will influence the lives and livelihoods of other people or impact on the state of the environment.

The UNU Global Seminar ? Okinawa Session aims to provide an opportunity to look closer at the broader issues that surround the production and consumption of food today. How have the industrialization of food production and globalization changed our foods and the ways in which we consume them? What is the state of global food security and in which ways do the United Nations and individual donor countries work to improve the situation? How does trade in food impact on the quality of foods and on national food industries? What can we learn from the public debate about genetically modified foods? Leading experts on food issues from Japan and abroad will share with seminar participants their insights and experience in a series of lectures and discussions in the plenary and in small group settings. Seminar participants will also have an opportunity to explore the impact on local food culture of global changes in food production and consumption through a lecture and tasting of Okinawan dishes.

UNU Global Seminars are aimed at deepening the understanding among students and young professionals in Japan of global problems that are the concern of the United Nations, its member states and their people. For those of you who are interested in issues of global concern or plan to pursue an international career, the seminar will serve as an excellent opportunity to deepen your knowledge and to sharpen your analytical and discourse skills. Interested members of the public are cordially invited to attend the keynote speeches on the first day of the seminar, during which simultaneous interpretation will be provided.
