Biographical Statement

Sohail Ahmad joined the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies in July 2011 as a UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellow under the Sustainable Urban Futures Programme, and subsequently became a JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellow from 1 October 2011 with joint affiliation to the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Ahmad, an Indian citizen, received a Ph.D. in city planning from Seoul National University. He holds a Master of Planning (with specialization in urban planning) from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi and a Bachelor of Architecture from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India.

Ahmad’s doctoral dissertation, entitled “Characteristics of Uncontrolled Urban Settlements and Housing Market in Delhi”, estimates quantitative and qualitative demand for slum and non-slum housing in Delhi. His current research interests include mitigation and adaptation strategies in low-income cities, particularly focusing on urban form. He is interested in exploring spatial planning strategies for socially disadvantaged communities.
