Biographical Statement

Ms. Oksana Buranbaeva currently facilitates the science policy dialogues between Germany and Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa entitled, Sustainable Solutions — Science for Sustainability (D4S). D4S is an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Previously, Ms. Buranbaeva worked as an Associate Social Affairs Officer with the UN DESA Division for Social Policy and Development in New York. Here she contributed to the UN report on the status of the world’s indigenous people and analyzed the progress made by states and UN agencies in the implementation of the recommendations of the 5th UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Prior to that, as a Project Officer for AIDS Foundation East-West in Kyrgyzstan, she was involved in the capacity development of the groups affected by HIV/AIDS. In 2003-2004 Buranbaeva worked as a consultant for a joint project between Columbia University and UNICEF Jordan, where she developed a participatory action research manual and facilitated action research workshops, engaging Jordanian Ministry of Education workers, students from the University of Jordan, NGO workers, women and teenage boys in Amman and in the Palestinian refugee camps in Zarqa in discussions about gender issues. In 2003, as a Project Associate for the London-based Public World, she moderated and publicized the World Bank’s e-discussion on World Development Report 2004, Making Services Work for Poor People.
