    Biographical Statement

    Aurea Christine Tanaka was born in Sao Paulo. She holds a degree in law and a Ph.D. in private international law from the University of Sao Paulo. Before joining the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Programme at the UNU Institute for Advanced Studies in 2008, she was a JSPS Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Graduate School of Law and Politics of the University of Tokyo, researching on international judicial cooperation. Aurea previously held other research positions at the same university, where she was also affiliated to the International Center for Comparative Law and Politics. While practising law in Brazil, she taught private international law, international procedural law and international relations.

    At UNU-IAS, she is responsible for one of the ESD Programme’s initiatives, ProSPER.Net (Promotion of Sustainability in Postgraduate Education and Research Network), an alliance of universities in the Asia-Pacific region committed to integrating sustainable development in their curricula. The projects developed within this framework aim at transformation of educational practices in the higher education scenario by integrating sustainability issues in the overall mission of universities to further develop the sustainability agenda and to nurture skills and competences needed for future leaders and practitioners to tackle the complex problems of our time.
