Since 2003, the United Nations University has been jointly organizing an annual series of public seminars with the Shibuya City Office. These seminars are intended to provide opportunities for lifelong learning to the residents of Shibuya as well as those who work and study in the ward.

The fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V), held on 1–3 June 2013, had discussions on various aspects of economy, society and peace, with a focus on Africa’s growth. The 2013 UNU Shibuya Seminar Series, which will be held on four consecutive Thursday evenings in July, will address these important topics and other relevant issues.

The third lecture, on 18 July, will be “Education for Sustainable Development in Africa: From Outcome of TICAD V”, by Mr. Kazuhiko Takemoto, Programme Director, UNU Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS), and Senior Researcher, Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S), and Dr. Abel Atiti, Research Fellow, UNU-IAS.

Simultaneous Japanese–English interpretation will be provided. The lecture is free and open to the public (subject to seating limitations), but advance registration is required.

See the seminar announcement on the UNU-ISP website for further details, including information on how to register.

Other lectures in this year’s UNU Shibuya Seminar Series are:

    • 4 July: “Japanese Initiatives for Agricultural Development in African Savanna”, by Dr. Osamu Ito, UNU-ISP
    • 11 July: “Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition in Africa: From Outcome of TICAD V”, Masato Ito, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
    • 25 July: “Africa’s Development and the Role of Japan”, by Dr. Obijiofor Aginam, UNU-ISP
