From 21 to 23 November, the UNU Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) will organize the 6th Global Regional Centres of Expertise (RCE) Conference in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. As the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD, 2005–2014) approaches its end, the conference aims to share a common vision and strategy, enhance collaboration among RCEs as well as related UN agencies, and work together towards 2014 and beyond.
The global event is organized by UNU-IAS and hosted by RCE Rhine-Meuse, with close collaboration from all European RCEs. The RCE network comprises existing formal, non-formal and informal education organizations, mobilized to deliver education for sustainable development (ESD) to local and regional communities.
The worldwide network of RCEs constitutes a Global Learning Space for Sustainable Development. RCEs aspire to achieve the goals of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development by translating its global objectives into the context of the local communities in which they operate. RCEs bring together institutions at the regional and local level to jointly promote ESD. They build innovative platforms to share information and experiences and to promote dialogue among stakeholders through partnerships for sustainable development.
The 6th Global RCE Conference will take stock of achievements to date, and review themes and challenges going forward as well as strategies to implement the vision of the RCE community. It includes both open (public) and closed (RCEs) sessions.
