Prof. Ernest Aryeetey

Overview
  • Prof. Aryeetey is a former Director and non-resident senior fellow with the Africa Growth Initiative in the Global Economy and Development program of the Brookings Institution (Washington, DC). He is Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana. He served as Chair of the UNU-WIDER Board from 2009–2015. From 2003–2010, he was Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) of the University of Ghana.

    Prof. Aryeetey studied economics and statistics at the University of Ghana, and obtained a PhD from the University of Dortmund (Germany). His research work focuses on the economics of development with interest in institutions and their role in development, regional integration, economic reforms, and financial systems in support of development and small enterprise development.

    Prof. Aryeetey has served as an expert advisor to a number of major international commissions and working groups, including as a member of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals Task Force on Growth and Poverty Reduction. He also has held a number of previous teaching and research appointments, including at the University of London, Yale University, Ohio State University, and Swarthmore College.
