Fiona Caldicott is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist. She was principal of Somerville College from 1996 until August 2010, and was also a pro-vice-chancellor of the University of Oxford from 2001 to 2010, with responsibility for personnel and equality from 2005 to 2009.
She currently is chair and a non-executive director of the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust and a trustee of the Daphne Jackson Trust. In January 2010, Dame Fiona was appointed as chair of the independent inquiry into events at UCL during the period of study of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.
As President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (1993-1996), she was also chairman of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (1995-1996). From 1996-1997, she chaired the Caldicott Committee on patient identifiable data for the National Health Service Executive (the recommendations of which have been implemented). Also from 1996-1998, she chaired a working group of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics that produced a report on genetics and mental disorder.
