Objective

The purpose of the UNU-ISP internship programme is as follows:

1. To promote interaction and dialogue between young scholars and staff members of UNU-ISP
2. To familiarize young scholars with the research work and project activities of UNU-ISP
3. To provide support to activities within UNU-ISP

The internships are well suited to versatile and enthusiastic individuals that are interested in contributing to the UNU-ISP in a wide variety of ways. Interns provide valuable logistical, organizational and research support. It offers a unique opportunity to be engaged with, and contribute to, the  research (and capacity development) projects being undertaken at UNU-ISP.

Criteria for Selection

Interns are selected based on the following criteria:

1. Qualifications and experience relevant to UNU-ISP in any one or more of its thematic areas:
   • Global Change and Sustainability
   • Peace and Security
   • International Cooperation and Development
2. Degree required: Bachelor or equivalent in disciplines related to the function. Final year undergraduate students may be considered, if they are highly motivated and have a strong academic background.
3. Candidates should request referee(s) to supply confidential letter(s) in support of their applications directly to the UNU-ISP Internships Committee: UNU-ISP_internship-NOT_FOR_SPAM-unu.edu
4. For non-Japanese nationals, an appropriate visa is required.

Duration

The internship will last at least two months, with a maximum duration of six months.

Office space and facilities

Interns will be provided office space and facilities as appropriate for their work and will have free access to the UNU library.

Conditions Governing the UNU-ISP Internship Programme

1. UNU-ISP can offer a daily travel allowance of 500 Yen (JPY).
2. All other expenses connected with the internship must be borne by the intern or their sponsoring Government or institution.
3. UNU-ISP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Interns must, therefore, provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan.
4. Interns themselves are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to UNU-ISP in Tokyo.

Interns undertake the following obligations with respect to the UNU-ISP Internship Programme:

1. To conduct themselves at all times in a manner compatible with their responsibilities as the holder of a UNU-ISP internship;
2. To keep confidential any and all unpublished information made known to them by the accepting office during the course of the internship and not to publish any reports or papers on the basis of information obtained during the programme, except with the explicit authorization of UNU-ISP;
3. To provide written notice in case of illness or other unavoidable circumstances which might prevent them from completing the internship;
4. To complete an internship evaluation report as appropriate at the end of the internship and to submit it to the Supervising Officer;
5. To return all library materials prior to the last day of the internship;
6. To return the identification card (UNU Building Pass) to the relevant staff on the last day of the internship.
